By Zelma Badu-Younge and Francis Nii --Yartey. Music by Joshua Uzoigwe, William Chapman -- Nyaho (Piano) and Paschal Yao Younge (Bata Drum) Special Tribute in Honor of the Late Dr. Esiaba Irobi, Former Associate Professor of Theatre, OU Dance Solo Performed by Zelma Badu-Younge. |
Talking Drums comprises five pieces titled Ukom, Bàtá, Ilulu, Dùndún and Egwu Amala, and is influenced by the rhythmic and melodic characteristics usually found in African master-players performing on such instruments as the Ukom membrane drum (akin to the xylophone) the Iyalu tension drum and the African small slit-drum. All five pieces are based on the Ukom scale/harmonic system. Ukom takes its musical elements from women's funeral music of the Igbo in Nigeria. The mournful and dance-like piece is based on a three-phrase ostinato pattern with contrasting sections including slower moving melodic and bass patterns and high intensity interlocking rhythmic and melodic figurations.
